New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
