Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured well-known figures.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
